Kerr Scott Reservoir Completed in the early 1960s as part of a flood control program, W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir was filled with the construction of a dam across the nearby Yadkin River. Located less than 10 miles west of the Wilkesboro city center, W. Kerr Scott Reservoir is a well-known day trip destination that can be reached in about 15 minutes by car via route US-421. Kerr Scott Reservoir, a lake created by damming a local stream many decades ago that now provides hydroelectric power and great recreation areas. Pack up the canoe or the kayak and paddle down the reservoir's many tributaries, or bring a fishing pole and try your luck at catching a big one. If you drive a bit further to the east of Smithey's Creek Park, you'll come across Mountain View Overlook, which is a great spot to have a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just make sure to bring your hiking boots and poles to explore the surrounding trails! 3. Stone Mountain State Park Visitors come from all over the country, and all over the world, to see the giant granite dome that protrudes from the mountains of Stone Mountain State Park. Located a short drive away from Wilkesboro in Roaring Gap, you can easily wake up in the early morning, be at the park in time for brunch, hike the trails and conquer the dome, and be back in time for dinner at your favorite local restaurant. The Dispensary Plenty of great options for your next meal are waiting for you at The Dispensary, with everything from handcrafted burgers to fresh seafood dishes on the menu. It was the house specialty pizzas that kept us coming back to this spot over and over again, however. Our favorite is the buffalo chicken pie, with crispy fried chicken over a hot sauce base with mozzarella cheese, bleu cheese crumbles, and a drizzling of homemade ranch dressing. 5. Dooley's Grill and Tavern The burgers at Dooley's Grill and Tavern are already locally famous, but you don't want to sleep on the terrific pizza available at this spot either. The extra-large 16-inch crust that they build their pies on will give you plenty of slices to share with your crew. The taco-seasoned ground beef combined with lettuce, tomato, onions, and salsa on their taco pizza had our mouths watering from the very first bite that we took.
