Looking for something fun to do this weekend or on a day off from work or school? There are plenty of things to do around Wilkesboro, NC, thanks to the surrounding natural beauty and the area’s deeply rooted history. So, jump into the Chrysler and check out some of these great local day trips!
1. Doughton Park
Wilkesboro was founded by mountain folk, and there is no better place to see what life was like for these early settlers than Doughton Park. Located just a few miles north of Wilkesboro in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Doughton Park features hiking trails and open meadows that are perfect for picnics, kicking a soccer ball, or tossing a frisbee.
But our favorite part of the park is the Brinegar Cabin. This log cabin, which was built in the 1700s and still stands today, shows what Appalachian life was like all those years ago. Strolling the grounds around the cabin, you can really imagine what it would have been like to live off the land and weather harsh storms and winters. It’s a really rewarding experience!
2. Smithey’s Creek Park
This next entry to our list is one of our absolute favorite places to visit during North Carolina’s hot, humid summer months. Smithey’s Creek Park is located on the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, a lake created by damming a local stream many decades ago that now provides hydroelectric power and great recreation areas. Pack up the canoe or the kayak and paddle down the reservoir’s many tributaries, or bring a fishing pole and try your luck at catching a big one.
If you drive a bit further to the east of Smithey’s Creek Park, you’ll come across Mountain View Overlook, which is a great spot to have a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just make sure to bring your hiking boots and poles to explore the surrounding trails!
3. Stone Mountain State Park
Visitors come from all over the country, and all over the world, to see the giant granite dome that protrudes from the mountains of Stone Mountain State Park. Located a short drive away from Wilkesboro in Roaring Gap, you can easily wake up in the early morning, be at the park in time for brunch, hike the trails and conquer the dome, and be back in time for dinner at your favorite local restaurant. You can also try your hand at rock climbing, if you aren’t afraid of heights!
Stone Mountain State Park is also a great spot to visit in case you want to spend a night or two! The park features a campground with utility hookups, as well as bathrooms and showers who prefer to camp in a simple tent and sleeping bag.
To make sure all of your passengers have plenty of leg room on these trips, drive a roomy vehicle like the 2022 Grand Wagoneer. Check one out at Randy Marion Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Today!
