3. Appreciate the Beautiful Views in Elk Knob State Park

If you’re the parent of teenagers, take them on a 41-mile road trip to Elk Knob State Park in Todd to stand on one of the highest peaks in North Carolina at an elevation of 5,520 feet.

Hike through the beautiful woodlands up the somewhat strenuous 1.9-mile natural surface and gravel Summit Trail to reach the top. From the summit, you will see spectacular views of Mount Jefferson, Mount Michell, Grandfather Mountain, and the Tree Top and Bluff Mountains as far as Mount Rodgers in Virginia and Tennessee in the distance.

Elk Knob State Park is at 5564 Meat Camp Road in Todd. The park is open November to February between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., March to May from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., June to August, the park closes at 9 p.m., and October and September at 8 p.m.
